Starting something is hard
I used to keep a weekly blog. In fact, I have kept weekly blogs at several different times in my life.
First, it was when I tried to say “yes” to something new every day and write about it.
Then, I wrote my weekly blog during COVID as a way to connect with people (and fill my time) when the world stopped.
After that, my weekly personal blog turned into a business blog that quickly ended when I got hired to create content. After a day of writing articles, the last thing I wanted to do was…write my own articles.
My most consistent blog writing has been when I traveled—a way to keep my friends and family updated on my adventures around the globe. Of course, this stopped during COVID, but I got to revive it last year on my trip to Ireland, and I realized I missed having an outlet to write, missed having a way to share my internal monologue with someone other than Ursula and Wilma (my beloved plant children).
Last week, I was in a writing class with some friends, and I shared the piece I wrote saying it was just some of my musings. A friend of mine responded, saying “I’d read a weekly column of Melanie’s Musings.”
And thus, this Substack was born.
It seems that Substacks and newsletters have overtaken blogs and tweets as the preferred method of sharing my thoughts with people on the internet (whether I know them or not), so I decided to stop on the bandwagon and start one myself.
I’ll send out weekly newsletters with observations, thoughts, beginnings of new standup sets…whatever I feel like really. I’ll share things I’m loving right now, including other newsletters, movies, TV shows, food…probably food.
I’m writing this for me because I love to write, and I enjoy sharing that writing with an audience. I firmly believe that everyone has a story to tell, so if these thoughts and stories inspire you to share yours, I’d love to hear them.
Thanks for reading (and subscribing)! And I’ll see you next week!
10 things I’m loving right now
Season 15 of Rupaul’s Drag Race is back, and it is giving me life.
I’ve been staying in and cooking a lot this month. This is my favorite soup recipe I’ve made recently. It takes under an hour, and it’s delicious.
My friend Lynn Chen has two great newsletters: Trying So Hard and The Yellow Pages. I look forward to them each week.
My friend Helenna Santos also just started a newsletter called My Life is a Movie, and I can’t wait for more.
I am reading The Bullet that Missed, a Thursday Murder Club Novel. It is delightful. As delightful as a mystery about murder can be, that is.
This pillow changed my life. I am a back and side sleeper, and I can never get comfortable. This is a game-changer.
Abbott Elementary. There’s a reason it’s winning everything.
I love meditating with Shawnta Valdes. She offers group meditations multiple times a week. I cannot recommend sitting with her enough.
This brownie recipe from Grandbaby Cakes (aka Jocelyn Delk Adams) is the greatest. You’re welcome.
Shameless plug. Jessica Benoist-Young and I just started recording season 2 of Best Line/Worst Line. I love recording, and I hope you love listening!
